DEMOLITION OVERVIEW

In order to make way for the new Transbay Transit Center at First and Mission streets in downtown San Francisco, the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA), along with contractor Evans Brothers Inc., must demolish the existing bus ramps and Transbay Terminal facility.

The Transbay Terminal closed on August 6. Bus operations have relocated to the Transbay Temporary Terminal. Demolition activities will last for eight months and will occur in four phases.

PHASE 1: Aug 14, 2010 – Sep 12, 2010

Because a significant portion of the Temporary Terminal lies below the elevated bus ramp leading to the existing terminal, the northwest corner of the Temporary Terminal will be unfinished when the facility first opens. Demolition of that portion of the ramp will allow for approximately two months of construction in order to finish the Temporary Terminal.

  • Weekend Closure: Friday, August 13, 2010 – Monday, August 16, 2010 – East Howard St. closure beginning on Saturday, August 14, 2010 through the early morning of Monday, August 16, 2010. Demolition of ramp on Howard St. between Beale & Main & to restore Muni at E. Howard St.
  • Activity: Monday, August 16, 2010 – Tuesday, August 24, 2010 – Demolition of ramp at Temporary Terminal site – Monday, August 16, 2010 through Tuesday, August 24, 2010.
  • Sidewalk Closure: Wednesday, September 1, 2010 – Friday, September 24, 2010 – A portion of the sidewalk on the south side of Howard, between Beale and Main, will be closed from September 1, 2010 to September 24, 2010. Pedestrians will need to use alternate routes to access the Temporary Terminal.

  • Weekday Activity: Monday, August 23, 2010 – Friday, September 3, 2010 – Completion of demolition of bridge bents from Beale Street to Fremont Street.
  • Weekday Lane Closure: Tuesday, September 7, 2010 – Friday, September 10, 2010 – Lane closure on Beale Street (between Howard and Mission Streets); demolition prep work under bridge.
  • Weekday Lane Closure***: Tuesday, September 7, 2010 – Friday, September 10, 2010 – Lane closure on Howard Street (between Main and Beale Streets); shoring, excavation and removal of bent.
  • Weekend Lane Closure: Saturday, September 11, 2010 – Sunday, September 12, 2010 – Lane closure on Fremont and Beale Streets (between Howard and Folsom Streets); demolition of bridge bents.
  • Weekday Lane Closure: Monday, September 13, 2010 – Friday, September 17, 2010 – Lane closure on Beale Street (between Howard and Mission) demolition prep work under bridge.
  • Weekday Lane Closure***: Monday, September 13, 2010 – Friday, September 17, 2010 – Lane closure on Howard Street (between Main and Beale Streets); removal of bent and foundation; backfill, compaction, and restoring sidewalk.
  • Weekend Road Closure: Friday, September 17, 2010 – Monday, September 20, 2010 – Beale Street closed (between Howard and Mission Streets); demolition of Beale Street Bridge.
